As new video games are developed, parents struggle with new terminology. After becoming familiar with different game consoles, parents have to differentiate game categories. A glossary of video game definitions can help parents in understanding video games.

RPG are Role Playing Games allow for players to be a prominent game character. Players can be anything from animals to powerful leaders.  Most RPG games enable gaming against other players in other locations via a console internet connection.

Vehicle Simulation games or VSG allow players to drive several different types of engine powered vehicles. The top three consoles offer VSG’s that provide a life-like experience to the player, with graphics that are remarkable. VSG on gaming consoles are remarkably close to training simulators for military personnel and pilots. For many VSG there are pedals, steering wheels and joysticks to enhance simulation.

CMS – This genre includes video games that incorporate Construction and Management Systems. These games allow gamers to customize diverse civilizations. The main focus of CMS games are profit and economics. These are about the development of a certain location whether a city or country not war. Developing business and communication skills is the focus of this game. The object is for the inhabitants to achieve an optimum lifestyle through the player’s successful building and management.

RTS or TBS – Both of these are used for strategy video games, one for Real Time and the other for Turn Based. In real time strategy games, the player must develop strategy “on the fly” as the game progresses, whereas turn-based allows time for the player to analyze the situation, work out a strategy and evaluate possible outcomes prior to exercising their turn. Internet and computer platforms can only be used for RTS games. TBS, on the other hand, can include board games. With real time strategy video games, players are reacting to a constantly changing environment, developing solutions to obstacles to achieve the best possible outcomes.  Many theorists believe that many of these RTS games help promote the creative thinking and problem solving skills that are found in top executives in business today.

Most video game categories do not have acronyms. Classifications such as action or action-adventure, warfare, shooting or party games follow the classic definitions, just as movie genres do.
