Most shows on TV are truly awful these days but the three television programs I highlight below stand above other TV shows as three of the top series of the century to this point!
The first series I want to suggest that you check is The Wire which was an excellent HBO program which was on for five seasons. Each season shows the viewer a different perspective of the city of Baltimore. It is a brilliant experience not only as a show that pulls the viewer in (like the other two shows in you will find below I can remember watching quite a few episodes in one day) but also as a show that makes really important points about America.
I do not want to get into what these points are, since I believe The Wire makes them far better than I could in an article like this one. But I will share that one of the things I really like about this show is how it really blurs the line between the “bad guys” and the “good guys.” The Wire is realistic in portraying people as having positive and negative features rather than as either simply all good or all bad.
The next show I want to recommend is actually the only one of the these three that is still on the air and that’s Dexter which is on Showtime. This is a series that I didn’t think I would get into when I first heard about it so it took awhile before I finally checked it out. I’m glad that I did. It has ended up among my favorite shows of all time. Yes, it’s definitely twisted (the main character is a serial killer after all) but it’s twisted in a quite cool way.
The third show I want to recommend as a great TV show of the 21st century is the one I have been most obsessed with recently and that’s probably because it has only recently ended. You can now buy the complete series of Lost and that is really the way to do it since this is a series that must be viewed from beginning to end without any skipping around.
What I like about Lost is that it’s “a big story” where each episode is a part of the whole thing and leads (in some way or another) into the next episode. The key to really enjoying Lost is to watch it from the beginning and don’t read any spoilers.
