Recent polls show that more than 50% of the population of Canada will regularly watch TV shows and movies online. These figures prove to us that people all over the world are choosing to get their entertainment from the internet. I have no doubt that the same kind of results would be shown here in the UK if the same survey was taken here. When more and more people see how great online video actually is, we are bound to see this trend continuing. • One of the great things about this form of entertainment is that it is so mobile. Picking up your favourite TV shows is possible no matter where you are provided of course that you have an internet receiving device with you. • There is an unbelievable amount of free content on the web. While some of the stuff available might be illegal, there are also a number of legitimate websites available with content as well. My favourite is the BBC iPlayer.

• I am of the opinion that we will no longer have pirated movies in the future. The film industry will finally come to realise that making money the way that it used to is no longer going to be possible. We will not be charged to watch movies but the industry will be able to make its money through advertising and merchandising for example. In the future we will be able to watch any movie we like, whenever we like, and without spending any money or breaking the law.

• In the next few decades there will be a revolution in how we experience movies. We are going to have a totally immersive experience that will put 3D movies in the shade. I envision some type of special glasses that will allow us to step right into the middle of the action. We probably won’t bat an eyelid at the thoughts of being able to interact with the characters in the movie either.

This weekend I got together with a few friends for a 24 hour online video marathon. We sat together and watched some of the best science fictions films that were ever made. To be honest, we spent most of the time watching the Star Wars movies but there were a couple of other classics that made it as well. Now I am completely shattered. It really does feel like I’ve just finished a marathon; or at least a mental marathon anyway.

The idea of a 24 hour online video marathon started off as a joke. Joe, my friend, was saying that his girlfriend complains constantly that he spends far too much time watching TV. We debated hard about what movies we were going to watch during the marathon. We all agreed that Star Wars must be on the menu but the other choices were a bit of a dilemma. I really wanted to watch one of the Star Trek movies and thankfully, they all allowed me to get my way. We had all seen every movie in the marathon previously but it was still fun to watch them again.
